President Donald Trump signed an order creating a Trump H-1B visa fee of $100,000. The fee applies to companies hiring foreign workers through the H-1B program.
Trump said the policy will ensure America gets “the best workers.” He explained that companies will hire more Americans, while still being able to bring in top foreign talent.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the administration is deciding how firms will pay. One option is $100,000 per year. Another is $300,000 upfront for three years.
The H-1B visa lets US firms hire foreign workers in specialized jobs. It lasts three years and can be renewed once. Tech companies rely heavily on this program. Each year, 65,000 visas are granted, with 20,000 more for US graduates.

Trump’s Gold Card Immigration Program
Alongside the Trump H-1B visa fee, Trump announced a “gold card” immigration path. Foreigners can pay $1 million for a fast-track visa. Companies may sponsor a worker by paying $2 million.
Lutnick, who designed the plan, said it will attract “extraordinary people at the very top.” He criticized the current green card system, saying it favors less skilled workers.
The new gold card aims to shift US immigration toward wealthier and highly skilled applicants. Supporters argue it protects American jobs and rewards talent. Critics warn it could block industries that need more affordable skilled labor.
Trump’s record on H-1Bs has changed over time. He restricted access during his first term but later showed support for skilled workers. With the visa fee and gold card, he is moving immigration policy toward a model based on money and expertise.
