Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, has said he hopes to reconcile with his estranged daughter following his recent leg amputation, which he described as a life-altering experience.
In an interview with the Daily Mail published on Saturday, Thomas Markle, 81, said he remains open to repairing his relationship with Meghan. He said he has never stopped loving his daughter and expressed a desire to see his grandchildren in the future. While he acknowledged wanting to speak to Meghan, he said he was uncertain whether the current circumstances were appropriate.
A spokesperson for the Duchess of Sussex confirmed earlier this week that Meghan had reached out to her father after learning of his surgery.
The spokesperson later clarified to the Daily Mail that she had sent an email, though members of Thomas Markle’s family told the outlet that he no longer uses the email address contacted. Us Weekly said it has sought further clarification from Meghan’s representative.
Thomas Markle was hospitalized in Cebu, the Philippines, after a blood clot cut off circulation to his left leg, resulting in severe tissue damage. Doctors ultimately amputated his leg below the knee as a life-saving measure. He remains under close medical observation and is expected to undergo further treatment for blood clots.
In the interview, Markle spoke candidly about the emotional and physical challenges following the surgery, saying he is struggling to come to terms with the loss of his leg.
He described experiencing phantom limb sensations and expressed concern about his future mobility and independence. While grateful to be alive, he said the prospect of adjusting to life without a leg is daunting.
Doctors have indicated that his recovery is likely to take several months, including time in a rehabilitation center to learn to walk again. Markle expressed gratitude to medical staff, well-wishers, and members of the public who have offered support.
His son, Thomas Markle Jr., previously confirmed details of the emergency surgery, saying doctors had advised that amputation was the only option to prevent life-threatening complications. His daughter, Samantha Markle, also voiced concern for her father’s health, noting that he has survived multiple medical emergencies in the past, including heart attacks and a stroke.

Thomas Markle has been estranged from Meghan since before her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018. Their relationship deteriorated after he admitted to staging paparazzi photographs ahead of the wedding. He later acknowledged misleading Prince Harry during a phone conversation about the images and ultimately did not attend the wedding after suffering heart attacks shortly beforehand.
Markle later suffered a stroke in 2022 and relocated to the Philippines, citing ongoing media scrutiny following the family rift.
