Kate Winslet Collaborates With Her Son on Directorial Debut ‘British actress Kate Winslet is making her directorial debut with the drama film Goodbye June, a deeply personal story written by her son, Joe Anders. The movie, which also features Winslet in an acting role, explores the emotional journey of a family coming together during a moment of crisis, a narrative inspired by the family’s own grief following the death of Winslet’s mother in 2017.
At the London premiere on December 3, Winslet and Anders presented the film to critics and fans, marking a striking collaborative moment for the mother‑son duo. Winslet explained that while the story is fictional, it carries real emotional weight: the film examines not just loss, but the bonds, love, and imperfections within a family confronting mortality.
Joe Anders crafted the screenplay when he was just 19, motivated by his personal experience of his grandmother’s final days. After finishing the script and seeking feedback from his mother, he sent it out to directors but Winslet felt she could not hand it over. Instead, she chose to direct the film herself, saying that allowing another director to take over would make the movie “theirs,” when the story was so close to their hearts.

For Winslet, the timing for this transition behind the camera felt right. Juggling a long acting career and motherhood had previously left little room for directing. But with Goodbye June, she found a story worth telling one that offered a meaningful way to highlight often-overlooked aspects of care and compassion within family and community.
Set against the backdrop of Britain’s public health system, the film honours palliative care workers and offers a compassionate look at life, death, and intergenerational relationships. The cast includes several well-known actors besides Winslet.
Goodbye June is scheduled to open in select UK cinemas on December 12, and will begin streaming on Netflix starting December 24.
