Hollywood actor Brendan Fraser has shared how his latest movie, Rental Family, helped him form strong and personal connections while filming in Japan. The film, directed by Japanese filmmaker Hikari, was shot in Tokyo and tells a touching story about loneliness and finding meaning through human relationships.
In Rental Family, Fraser plays Phillip, an American actor who travels to Japan to appear in a toothpaste commercial. When his acting work slows down, he takes a strange new job as a “rental family member”, someone who gets paid to play the role of a friend, relative, or companion for people who need company. As Phillip meets different clients, he begins to understand what it means to truly connect with others.
Fraser said the role changed how he sees relationships. “It’s about people who are alone and how they reach out to each other,” he explained. He also said that working in Japan taught him a lot about kindness and respect. Before filming began, Fraser spent time learning Japanese and exploring Tokyo to better understand local culture and customs.

Director Hikari said she wanted the film to show what it feels like to live in a foreign country and to search for belonging. She explained that many people experience loneliness, and the movie reminds viewers that even small acts of care can make a big difference.
Rental Family premiered at the London Film Festival, where it received warm reviews for its heart and humor. The movie is set to be released in U.S. cinemas on November 21, 2025, with international releases expected early next year.
Fraser, best known for films like The Whale and The Mummy, said the story of Rental Family is one that will stay with him because it’s about hope, kindness, and the simple power of human connection.
