Hollywood star Tessa Thompson is bringing a new version of the classic play Hedda Gabler to the screen. The movie, called Hedda, is directed by Nia DaCosta and will premiere in theaters on October 24. It will also be available to stream on Prime Video starting October 29.
This film is based on Henrik Ibsen’s 1890 play, but it is set in 1950s England. Thompson plays Hedda, a smart and powerful woman who feels bored and trapped in her life. In the story, she attends a fancy party while secretly trying to help her husband George move ahead in his career.

The plot becomes tense when Eileen Lovborg, George’s rival and Hedda’s former lover, comes back into the picture. Lovborg has changed and is now sober and focused on her work. Her return threatens Hedda’s plans and starts a chain of events that leads to emotional conflict and drama.
Thompson, who also helped produce the movie, said she wanted to show both the strength and weaknesses of Hedda. She explained that Hedda is a woman who wants freedom but is limited by the rules of her society. Thompson said this makes Hedda’s story still important today.
The director, Nia DaCosta, worked closely with Thompson to bring a modern feel to the story. They also made some changes to the original play, like changing Lovborg into a woman named Eileen. This adds new ideas about power, honesty, and women’s roles in a male-dominated world.
Critics and audiences are excited to see Thompson in this new role. Her version of Hedda shows a mix of ambition, cleverness, and danger. The movie combines a stylish setting with deep psychological drama, giving viewers a fresh way to understand a classic story.
Hedda is expected to be a bold and memorable adaptation, showing both Thompson’s acting talent and DaCosta’s creative vision. Fans can watch it soon in theaters or on Prime Video.
