RICHMOND — RCMP say they have arrested the pilot of a small aircraft that was allegedly taken from Victoria and flown to Vancouver International Airport, prompting a brief halt to arriving flights.
Richmond RCMP said the report of a Cessna that “had been hijacked” came in shortly after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, indicating the aircraft was en route to Vancouver. Police arrested the “sole occupant” after the plane landed.
Videos posted to social media show multiple police vehicles on a runway behind the single-engine aircraft as officers moved toward it. A photo shared online appears to show a bearded man in a grey T-shirt and dark pants raising his hands while officers point their weapons at him.
Vancouver International Airport said the “security incident” involving the privately operated aircraft forced a 39-minute halt to arrivals before operations resumed. The airport said the situation unfolded in the airspace above YVR around 1:30 p.m.
In an air-traffic control recording from the same period, a tower controller announces that a Cessna 172 “has been hijacked” and warns pilots to keep watch for “anything heading towards you.” The controller adds that the aircraft was circling overhead and its “intention” was unknown.
Online flight-tracking data shows the plane departed Victoria International Airport before circling repeatedly near YVR and landing at 1:43 p.m.
Victoria International Airport confirmed the aircraft was operated by the Victoria Flying Club and said the incident was “safely resolved,” with the individual involved taken into RCMP custody. The flying club did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
YVR said nine inbound aircraft were diverted during the ground stop. The airport advised travellers to expect potential delays and to check with their airline or visit its website before heading to the airport.
