Battle River–Crowfoot, Alberta — Voters in the federal riding of Battle River–Crowfoot are heading to the polls Monday in a historic byelection to elect a new Member of Parliament.
The vote comes after Damien Kurek stepped aside following April’s federal election, paving the way for Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre to contest the riding.
The byelection, officially called on June 30, has drawn unprecedented attention after a record 214 candidates registered — the highest number ever in a single Canadian riding.
Due to the extraordinary field, Elections Canada was forced to redesign the ballot. Instead of the traditional format, voters will cast their choice by writing in the name of their preferred candidate.
Advance polling earlier this month saw nearly 14,500 voters cast their ballots. Polls remain open on Election Day from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
