Australian actor Liam Hemsworth is stepping into the lead role of Geralt of Rivia in the upcoming fourth season of the hit fantasy series The Witcher, signalling a fresh chapter for the show and its characters.
The series, which will be available on the streaming service Netflix, returns after more than two years away. Hemsworth takes over the central role from Henry Cavill, who portrayed the monster hunter since the show began in 2019 and exited after season three in 2023.

Based on the novels of author Andrzej Sapkowski, the series follows Geralt in the mystical Continent as he hunts monsters and navigates the complexities of his fate, and that of those around him. Hemsworth acknowledged the weight of the role, stating that he knew the character had a “massive, passionate fan base” and that he wanted to bring his own interpretation while honouring the world.
The show’s creator, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, described the fourth season as a “refresh” for the show. She explained that Hemsworth’s arrival brought “new energy” and prompted changes not just in lead casting but in the show’s look, sound and movement. Hemsworth himself said he plans to infuse a bit more levity into Geralt’s journey, offering a fresh tone alongside the darker moments the series is known for.
Season four will follow Geralt’s storyline after his separation from key characters such as princess Ciri and sorceress Yennefer, teaming him with new travel companions and emotional connections. The season was filmed alongside the upcoming and final fifth season, and together they will cover three of Sapkowski’s remaining novels: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake.
With Hemsworth in the lead, the fourth season of The Witcher aims to evolve the franchise’s mythology while giving long-time fans something new to anticipate. The shift in lead actor and the announced refresh signals that the creators intend to keep the series dynamic and relevant as it moves through the next chapters of its story.
