Lakers Fire Joey and Jesse Buss, Remove Several Scouts in Big Front-Office Change

The Los Angeles Lakers have fired executives Joey Buss and Jesse Buss and let go of several team scouts. The team said this is part of a major change in their front office.

The changes come after billionaire Mark Walter completed his purchase of the Lakers in October. Walter now controls the team and is making big changes to how it is run.

Joey and Jesse Buss are sons of the late Lakers owner Jerry Buss. Joey worked as vice president of research and development and as the team’s alternate governor. Jesse was the assistant general manager and director of scouting. Both had been with the team for around 20 years.

In a statement, the brothers thanked Lakers fans and said they were sad to leave their jobs. They said, “At times like this, we wish we could ask our Dad what he would think.” They will still keep a small ownership stake in the team, even though they are no longer executives.

The front-office overhaul also affected the Lakers’ scouting department. Several scouts lost their jobs as the team plans to change how it finds and develops players.

Joey and Jesse helped the Lakers find several young players who became stars, including Austin Reaves, Kyle Kuzma, Jordan Clarkson, and Max Christie. Their work has been important to the team’s success over the years.

The move also highlights tensions inside the Buss family. Jesse has mentioned having less communication with his sister Jeanie Buss, who still serves as the team’s operating governor. Jesse also revealed he has been dealing with a long-term illness and receiving treatment.

This change marks the end of an era for the Lakers. Joey and Jesse Buss have been part of the team’s leadership for two decades. Now, under new ownership, the Lakers are starting a new chapter, aiming to reshape the team’s management and future strategy.

The Lakers said they are focused on building a strong front office that can support the team in the coming years and continue to compete at the highest level in the NBA.
