Ghana Wins Three Gold Medals at 2025 African Youth Boxing Championship

Team Ghana, known as the Black Rockets, delivered an outstanding performance at the 2025 African Youth Boxing Championship, securing three gold medals in a dominant display in Conakry, Guinea.

The trio of victories came through Gideon Pappoe, George Dowuona, and Mathias Ashitey, as Ghana reaffirmed its boxing pedigree on the continental stage.

Pappoe sealed Ghana’s third gold medal in emphatic fashion, delivering a second-round knockout against South Africa’s Mighty Sangoni in the Men’s Middleweight (75kg) division.

Earlier, Ashitey and Dowuona had set the tone for Ghana’s success. Ashitey triumphed in the Flyweight (51kg) division, while Dowuona defeated Ethiopia’s Ydnrnkachew Korabachew in the Bantamweight (54kg) final to claim Ghana’s second gold.

The Black Rockets’ commanding performance marks a new era in Ghanaian boxing, drawing inspiration from Bukom, the legendary boxing enclave that has produced over eight world champions.

The achievements also reflect the renewed commitment of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, whose youth-focused initiatives—such as the soon-to-be-launched Amateur Boxing League—aim to nurture the next generation of champions.

With this latest triumph, Ghana continues to cement its position as a powerhouse in African boxing.
