Florida Expands COVID-19 Shot Access as Publix and Walgreens Begin On-Site Vaccinations

As of September 23, 2025, Florida residents seeking the updated COVID-19 vaccine have more convenient options, thanks to new policies from major pharmacy chains Publix and Walgreens. These retailers are now offering COVID-19 vaccinations on-site without requiring a doctor’s prescription, expanding access to eligible individuals.

The decision follows guidance from the Florida Board of Pharmacy, which clarified that pharmacists can administer FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines to eligible patients aged 18 and older under existing protocols. Consequently, Publix announced it would begin administering the 2025–2026 COVID-19 vaccine to qualifying individuals starting Wednesday, September 24. Similarly, Walgreens confirmed it would offer the vaccine without a prescription for adults aged 65 and older, as well as those under 65 with certain health conditions, in line with FDA recommendations.

This move aims to streamline access to the updated vaccine, which targets the most common COVID-19 variant currently circulating. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has yet to issue final guidance, both pharmacy chains are prepared to administer the vaccine to all adults once the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) formally approves the recommendation.

Eligible individuals can receive the vaccine at participating Publix and Walgreens locations. Appointments can be scheduled online or via the respective pharmacy’s app. Walk-ins are also accepted, depending on the location. Insurance coverage is generally available through Medicaid, CHIP, and most commercial plans, with most insurers, including UnitedHealthcare, covering the vaccine at no cost through at least 2026.

This initiative is part of Florida’s broader efforts to enhance vaccination accessibility in anticipation of increased respiratory illnesses during the cooler months. Residents are encouraged to check with local pharmacies for availability and to ensure they meet eligibility criteria before seeking vaccination.
