Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem Sai, has assured Ghanaians that Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine will never pursue prosecutions unless there is solid evidence that supports the likelihood of a conviction.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express Wednesday night, Dr. Srem Sai underscored Dr. Ayine’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law, describing him as “a deeply principled man” who would never allow political pressure or public sentiment to compromise legal standards.
“He will not go to court unless he has sufficient evidence to convince himself that the prosecution may be successful,” Dr. Srem Sai stated firmly.
The Deputy Attorney General’s remarks come at a time of heightened public interest in high-profile legal cases and growing scrutiny of the justice system’s independence. Dr. Srem Sai’s comments were aimed at bolstering public confidence in the Attorney General’s Department.
“He is not going to persecute anybody,” he continued. “He is a very principled man when it comes to law. He will not trade anything for the position of the law.”
Dr. Srem Sai also revealed that his decision to accept the position of Deputy Attorney General was largely influenced by his long-standing trust in Dr. Ayine’s integrity.
“I have known him for several years, since law school. He taught me constitutional law, administrative law, and natural resource law. So I know the calibre of lawyer and person he is.”
According to Dr. Srem Sai, knowing that the Attorney General would always adhere strictly to legal principles gave him the confidence to take on the demanding role.
“That is not to say that every case will end in conviction. But that is the level of confidence we have before stepping into court.”
He admitted the role has been challenging, especially given the public expectations that accompany it.
“I felt the weight of expectation of Ghanaians upon my appointment,” he confessed. “It’s not been easy, and I’m sure you can see from my eyes—hardly sleep.”
Despite the intense pressure, Dr. Srem Sai reiterated that the integrity of the office remains intact, crediting Dr. Ayine’s leadership as a stabilizing force.
“With that guidance, or the person who is leading the Attorney General’s department, I became very comfortable with the appointment.”
