Accra, Ghana — In a social media post addressed directly to the President, Dumelo appealed for a halt to all state, regional, and district-level events scheduled for the 66th Independence Day, which falls on Monday, March 6, 2023.
“Greetings @NAkufoAddo, respectfully we are in hard times. Can you please cancel all state, regional, and district Independence Day celebrations?” he tweeted. “You can do your usual ‘fellow Ghanaians’ television broadcast. We will save millions of cedis as a result of this. Thank you so much.”
This year’s celebration, themed “Our Unity; Our Strength; Our Purpose,” is expected to draw thousands to Ho, the Volta Regional capital, where the main national event will be held. Similar activities are expected across the country.
However, Dumelo believes resources should be redirected to address pressing national concerns instead of ceremonial observances.
The call reflects growing public frustration over rising inflation, high debt levels, and unemployment, as many Ghanaians continue to grapple with economic challenges.
As of now, the Presidency has not responded to the appeal, and preparations for the celebrations appear to be continuing as planned.
