Authorities have confirmed that the teenager previously arrested in connection with the felling of the famous Sycamore Gap tree will face no further action.
The investigation into the incident at Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland, overnight on September 27–28, continues. Northumbria Police said that three adults, a man in his 60s and two men in their 30s remain on bail in connection with suspected criminal damage.
Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Fenney-Menzies acknowledged the strong public reaction to the loss of the landmark tree, which fell onto the Roman wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
She said, “We completely recognise the feeling of loss in the community and further afield following the deliberate felling of Sycamore Gap. Our investigation continues, and we remain committed to establishing the full circumstances surrounding the damage and bringing any offenders to justice.”
Fenney-Menzies also encouraged anyone with information to come forward, stressing that even small details could be vital to the inquiry.
Historic England has confirmed that the wall sustained damage when the 50-foot tree fell. The Sycamore Gap tree, one of the UK’s most photographed, gained international fame from a scene in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves starring Kevin Costner.
