RM, the leader of the world-famous K-pop group BTS, spoke at the APEC CEO Summit in Gyeongju, South Korea, calling on world leaders to invest more in creativity and culture. He said that art and culture can bring people together because “culture has no borders.”
Speaking in English, RM shared the story of BTS’s early days when the group faced challenges entering the global music scene. He said that back then, many people did not even know where Korea was, but BTS worked hard and connected with fans around the world through their music and message. He praised their fan group, known as ARMY, for helping them break barriers and spread Korean culture worldwide.

RM said that culture, like a river, should flow freely across nations. He explained that K-pop is an example of how creativity and diversity can create something powerful. Comparing K-pop to the Korean dish bibimbap, he said both combine different ingredients to make something unique and beautiful. “K-pop’s success shows that creativity and diversity are the greatest powers of humanity,” he added.
RM also urged political and business leaders to see culture as an important part of the economy, not just entertainment. He asked them to support young artists with funding, training, and opportunities. “Please help creators everywhere. Give them support so their creativity can bloom,” he said. He described culture as a “powerful force that moves hearts” and said leaders should build a “canvas and playground” for artists to create freely.
At the end of his speech, RM promised to continue sharing messages of courage and hope through music. “I’ll play my heart out in the playground you build for us,” he said. His appearance marked the first time a K-pop artist gave a keynote speech at an APEC summit, showing how far Korean culture has reached globally.
RM’s message reminded leaders that creativity and culture are not just for fun; they are key parts of innovation, unity, and economic growth in today’s world.
